Walking Dead’s showrunner, Glen Mazzara, made an appearance on AfterBuzz TV’s Walking Dead aftershow Sunday night. In his appearance, Mazzara gives a detailed description of behind the scenes, discusses how he and the writers think of new ways to kill off zombies every week, and what he thinks of his replacement on The Walking Dead staff, Scott Gimple.

On Originally Joining The Walking Dead

Glen says, I signed on to be Frank Darabonts number twoI wrote Wildfire in the first episode, in the first season and I had a great time doing that. I love working with Frank.

[The Walking Dead] is a really big machine. It is a really tough show to run. As all [TV shows] are, but every showrunner thinks their’s is the toughest. I could offer [Frank] some support since I had been a showrunner on some other shows. He asked me to come on and be his number two and then you know things didnt work outhe ended up leaving the show.

On Leaving the Show Next Season

Glen says, It’s not my show. I didn’t create [The Walking Dead]. You know Frank [Darabont] created the show. There’s no hard feelings…I’ve done my job. I think I’ve delivered.

On Mazzara’s Replacement, Scott Gimple

Glen says, I brought Scott onto the show. Scott worked on Life. I did Life the first season and he did it the second season. I never met him, but I saw his name and he was availableI reached out to some of the people who were on staff both seasons and they worked with both of us and they said, ‘[Scott] is brilliant…youll love him.’ He and I had a meal and he has a lot of great thoughts about TV…I brought him into Frank [Darabont]. I was kind of saying, ‘I would back this writer.’ I wrote a cover letter saying I really believe in [Scott] and think that he can contribute in a significant way. Frank agreed and we were eventually both right. I think the shows in good hands.

On Finding Fresh Ways to Kill Zombies

[Figuring out ways to kill zombies] is a lot of the fun. We push each other as writers to come up with these ideas, Glen says, Theres a certain amount of expectation that [Walking Dead] fans have. They want to see zombies. They want to see zombies killed, but we have to keep that fresh because if its always the same thing, thats going to get boring. We really try to work closely with the other writers, the director, with the production design, stunts, Greg [Nicotero], everybody has a lot of different ideas and its an incredibly collaborative process.

On the Best Note Glen Ever Got from the Studio

AfterBuzz asks, Before we started watching you told us that you got the best studio note you had ever received in your entire career. What was that note?

Glen responds, Please digitally erase the burnt penis…In [Season 3, Episode 14’s] screamer pit, when you find the burned walkers, one of the walkers actually had a penis. And we had to digitally erase the burnt penis…We didn’t even see it. But it’s like, ‘Oh! There it is!’ And Nicotero had to erase it.

On Glen Playing a Zombie on the Show

Glen says, I was thinking about it, but I just never got the chance. So, well see.
