Catching up with Blake Lewis

by Allie on May 18, 2010

Blake shot 3 High Res.

I went to see one of my favorite bands from the '80s the other night. A-ha, who broke big in 1985 thanks to a groundbreaking (for the time) video that MTV played on heavy rotation, took America by storm on the back of one synthesizer melody. I loved “Take On Me” just as much as any Euro-pop obsessed 13-year-old, but I didn’t abandon the Norwegian trio after their debut album, “Hunting High and Low.” I actually preferred their follow-up, the moody, ambitious and lesser-known “Scoundrel Days,” which sold a fraction of the copies but had a certain realness to it; like they were trying to talk directly to their fans from beyond the sea — no matter what the listener’s native tongue — with the language of melody.

Kara Dioguardi and her co-writer Jason Reeves teamed up to sing their song “Terrified” on Lopez Live last night. Top 10 contestant, Didi Benami had a moment with the song during Hollywood week, and Season 5 runner up, Katharine McPhee recorded the song for her latest album, Unbroken . Didi’s version is my favorite, but Kara does a lovely job here.  Check it out after the jump. Video after the JUMP…

Ten former “American Idol” finalists, including Season 5's Elliott Yamin, Season 2's Kimberley Locke, Season 6's Brandon Rogers, Season 3's Latoya London and Season 9's Didi Benami, came together in downtown L.A. on Tuesday to help fill backpacks with food for needy children in the area (Season 7's Michael Johns also was expected but didn't make it because he was sick). The effort, organized by Feeding America and the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank, is part of next week's “Idol Gives Back” charity special (airing April 21), which will be broadcast out of two venues: the “Idol” studio, where Ryan Seacrest will host, and the Pasadena Civic, where many of the performances will be staged (tickets for the Pasadena show can be bought at

Kara DioGuardi’s weekend solo shows: The reviews are in

by American Idol Blog on April 11, 2010

Kara DioGuardi's Atlantic City gamble seems to have paid off. The “American Idol” judge performed two shows over the weekend at the Borgata Casino's Music Box to little fanfare and positive reviews — or at least one key write-up by the New York Times . Writer Jon Caramanica reports that Kara sang eight songs from her hefty pop library, including “Pieces Of Me (later a track from Ashlee Simpson), “Escape” (Enrique Inglesias), and “Sober” (Pink), each accompanied by personal stories about the songs.
